Startup Dispatches First In-House Engineered Electrolyser For Lab-Grown Diamond Sector

03-11-2025   01:05 PM

Mangaluru: HYDGEN, a deep-tech innovator headquartered in Singapore with significant operations/office at Sahyadri College of Engineering and management, successfully dispatched its first in-house engineered electrolyser, custom-designed for the lab-grown diamond sector. The first dispatch will be sent to Surat, Gujarat, to a diamond factory.

The dispatched model, HYDGEN DIA-S 5 kW PEM electrolyser, was inaugurated by DK MP Capt Brijesh Chowta on Sunday, features a hydrogen generation capacity of 1 Nm³ per hour with 99.9995% purity at a back pressure of 10 bar. Engineered for Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) applications in lab-grown diamond manufacturing, the system utilises hydrogen as a reducing agent to remove non-diamond carbon and sustain the plasma atmosphere essential for diamond formation.

This marks the startup's transition from development to deployment, underscoring its mission to advance sustainable hydrogen production technology and strengthen India's clean energy ecosystem. The startup was launched in Aug last year, and started functioning fully from Jan this year. Developed entirely at its own facility, the electrolyser symbolises the company's strong commitment to innovation, indigenisation, and its pursuit of scalable green hydrogen solutions suitable for industrial and mobility applications.

"This achievement highlights the capability and dedication of our engineering and research and development teams," said Manipaddy Krishna Kumar, COO and co-founder of Hydgen.

"Delivering our first in-house electrolyser to a client validates our technology and strengthens our position in India's growing green hydrogen ecosystem. This inaugural shipment marks the beginning of the startup's first commercial operations phase, reaffirming its role in driving India's decarbonisation and energy self-reliance through indigenous hydrogen technology," he added.

He also added that currently, industries that manufacture lab-grown diamonds depend upon technology from abroad, which is expensive. Building on this first dispatch, the startup now plans to scale up electrolyser capacities while advancing stack enhancement, modular design, and system efficiency improvements.

MP Chowta said that the startup is a perfect example of Atmanirbhar Bharat. There are only two industries that produce engineered electrolysers, and a Mangaluru-based startup is one of them. The heads of this startup had good jobs in Singapore, but they chose to come back to Mangaluru and create this industry. Recently, two companies led by Mangalureans have chosen the MSEZ area. They will invest in manufacturing EV batteries and solar panels. Our slogan for this coastal region should be, ‘Innovate in Mangaluru for the World,' he said, adding that through his Bolpu programme, he wants to create 50 success stories.
