GJEPC seeks clarity from U.S. Customs on Tariff Rules for refined gold

GJEPC has submitted a request to the U.S.Customs and Border Protection Authority, seeking clarification on tariff exemptions for U.S.- refines gold used in Indian Jewellery Exports.

The move follows the United States' recent imposition of reciprocal tariffs. GJEPC's submission aims to determine whether gold refined in the U.S. can be considered "U.S. content" under current tariff rules, which could exempt it from certain duties.

Under U.S. regulations, goods that contains at least 20 % U.S. - origin content - defined as components substantially transformed in the U.S - may qualify for partial or full tariff relief. GJEPC wants confirmation that this includes U.S. - refined gold used in jewellery exported from India.

The Council filed the request on behalf of its members on 14th May 2025, including supporting import and export documents to aid the review process. The U.S. Customs authority has acknowledged receipt of the application.
