GSI and Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC Advance Colored Gemstone Education Through Industry-Focused Masterclass

25-05-2026   12:15 PM

Gemological Science International (GSI), in collaboration with Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC, an initiative of GJEPC and supported by the commerce ministry of India, successfully conducted its next batch of “Gem Identification Masterclass", focusing on the growing importance of gemstone education within the Indian jewellery industry.

As gemstones continue to gain momentum globally, the industry is witnessing a clear shift in consumer preferences toward individuality, rarity, and transparency. This evolving demand is also influencing how retailers, manufacturers, and next-generation jewellery entrepreneurs approach gemstone sourcing, quality evaluation, and customer communication.

Designed specifically for industry professionals, the masterclass focused on practical and market-relevant gemological training. The curriculum covered gemstone identification, separation of natural gemstones from simulants and synthetics, advanced treatment detection, understanding geographic origin, and factors affecting value.

Participants received hands-on exposure to professional gemological instruments and real-world materials, allowing them to experience the technical and accurate aspects of gemstone analysis firsthand under the guidance of GSI’s experienced instructors.
Industry professionals attending the program demonstrated increasing curiosity toward the science, authenticity, and traceability behind gemstones, factors that are becoming critical in building consumer trust and long-term brand credibility.

Sharing his experience, Ashraf Motiwala from AS Motiwala Fine Jewellery said, “What made this program valuable was the practical exposure and the opportunity to experience gemstone identification firsthand. The hands-on learning approach gave deeper clarity on how complex the colored gemstone category truly is today. As the industry evolves, initiatives like these play an important role in helping businesses build stronger knowledge and greater confidence internally.”

The collaboration between GSI and Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC reflects a larger industry-wide effort to bridge knowledge gaps within the colored gemstone segment and equip professionals with expertise that extends beyond basic theoretical understanding.

“India has long been a global center for gemstones and jewelry manufacturing but sustaining that leadership also requires continuous investment in education and skill development. Through our collaboration with GSI, we are creating opportunities for professionals across the industry to strengthen their expertise and better align with the evolving standards of the global market.” said Ravi Menon, CEO, Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC.

“The colored gemstone category is evolving rapidly, and so are consumer expectations. Today’s retailers and jewelry professionals are looking for deeper technical understanding because customers are asking more informed questions than ever before. Our goal with programs like these is to create confidence within the trade by making gemological knowledge more practical, accessible, and directly relevant to business.” said Ramit Kapur, Managing Director, GSI India.

As the market grows increasingly sophisticated, initiatives focused on technical education, transparency, and professional training are expected to play a defining role in shaping the future of the industry.
