A rare pink diamond found in Angola in Central America may be the largest recovered in the last three centuries, that is 300 years, according to Australian miner Lucapa Diamond Co.

The 170-carat stone from the Lulo alluvial mine has been named the “Lulo Rose,” the company and its partners, Endiama E.P. and Rosas & Petalas said in an exchange filing on Wednesday. It will be sold through an international tender conducted by Angolan state-owned diamond trading firm Sodiam.

The Lucapa Diamond Company said in a statement to investors that it is among the largest pink diamonds ever found in history. The find of the Type IIa diamond, one of the rarest and purest forms of natural stones, has now been welcomed by the Angolan government, which is also a partner in mine.

“This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage,” Angola’s Mineral Resources Minister Diamantino Azevedo said.

To be sold at a record-breaking price
The diamond will be sold at international tender, likely at a dazzling price. Although The Lulo Rose would have to be cut and polished to realise its actual value, in a process that can see a stone lose 50 percent of its weight, similar pink diamonds have sold for record-breaking prices.

Following the discovery, Angola's mineral resources minister Diamantino Azevedo said that Angola is an essential global player in diamond mining. "It demonstrates the potential and rewards for commitment and investment in our growing diamond mining industry," the minister added.

Gems found in the past
Earlier in March 2022, it was revealed that the largest white diamond was to be sold and it could fetch a whopping $30 million and was to be auctioned in Switzerland in May. Whether it was auctioned at the price or not is unknown.

Christie’s auction announced that the pear-shaped diamond named 'The Rock' was 228.31 carats, and it led the Geneva Magnificent Jewelssale on May 11, 2022, as part of Christie’s Luxury Week.

This gemstone is said to be extremely rare and it was mined and polished in South Africa over two decades ago and is the largest white diamond ever to be auctioned.
